Chapter Thirteen

Their night at the hotel had passed in relative peace, but the looming sense of danger had not gone away.

Mother LeBlanc emerged from the room she shared with Crystal Green and Amanda Moore. The informal conference they had agreed to would be beginning momentarily, and most of the other members were already in the living area of the largest room on the hotel’s second floor. Samantha Martinez and Mary Mitchell were coming down the hall.

LeBlanc flagged them down. “How is James?” She wasn’t sure which of them was handling healing duties for the evening, so the question was posed to both women equally.

Samantha frowned and seemed unsure of what to say, so Mary took the initiative. “He is somewhat better. The long walk worsened his condition after the improvements he had made, but not enough to put him back in critical condition. I would guess he’ll be back to where he was with another day or two of rest.”

LeBlanc nodded as they walked toward the meeting place. “Will he be in attendance? I’m guessing not, or he would likely be with you.”

This time, Samantha was the one who answered her. “He’s up. He said he’ll join us in a few minutes if he’s able, but we told him not to worry about it if he didn’t feel up to moving around and talking.”

They were right in front of the entrance to their destination when a door behind them opened. LeBlanc glanced over her shoulder and saw James shuffle out, so she waited.

A moment later, James was at her side. “Hi.”

She looked him over. He had the appearance of a man who had undergone major surgery but had not had time for such trivial matters as a shower or a shave. He knew he presented a grimy and pathetic appearance, but he was trying to maintain his dignity.

“Good evening, James. I’m glad to see you’re doing better. Shall we?” She offered him her arm.

He managed a wan smile and looped his arm around her elbow as they stepped into the living room of the double suite they had rented.

Everyone else was already there, waiting. There were nods and murmurs of encouragement at the sight of James, though half of them also furrowed their brows in worry about his marginal condition.

LeBlanc helped him sit down before she took her own place and waited for the discussion to begin. She assumed Mary would act as master of ceremonies, though she planned to do most of the talking today.

Lady Mitchell did not disappoint. “Good evening, everyone. We have come far, and for the time being, we are safe. Let us rejoice in the small victories we have won, but we need to discuss what to do next. Mother, I believe you had something you wanted to tell us or a suggestion to make?”

Mother LeBlanc raised her hands as all eyes turned to her. “Yes. We have thus far been unable to decide where we shall go from here. We cannot stay in West Virginia.
